<p>Home Secretary G K Pillai and US Ambassador to India Timothy J Roemer signed the MoU for enhancing cooperation in curbing money laundering, counterfeit currency and terrorist financing. Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao was also present.<br /><br />The MoU on counter-terrorism initiative will provide for strengthening capabilities to effectively combat terrorism, promotion of exchanges regarding modernisation of techniques, sharing of best practices on issues of mutual interest, development of investigative skills and promotion of cooperation between forensic science laboratories. <br />Roemer said US President Barack Obama and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had “acknowledged the common threat that international terrorism poses to all people”. “Today, with the formal signing of the counter-terrorism cooperation initiative, we take several significant steps forward against terrorism. In the coming days and months, there will be even closer information sharing and collaborative efforts on issues ranging from bomb blast, investigations and major event security to mega-city policing, cyber-security and border security,” Roemer said. <br /><br />Provisions<br />The deal has provisions for establishment of procedures to provide mutual investigative assistance, enhancing capabilities to act against money laundering, counterfeit currency and financing of terrorism, exchanging best practices on mass transit and rail security, increasing exchanges between the Navy and Coast Guards on maritime security and exchanging experience and expertise on port and border security, enhancing liaison and training between specialist counter terrorism units, including National Security Guards, with their United States counterparts.<br /><br />Pillai said India and the United States had identified several areas for enhanced counter-terrorism cooperation during Home Minister P Chidambaram’s visit to the United States.<br />The new agreement had provisions for cooperation in all those areas, he added. <br /></p>
