Novell launches Linux-based operating system for desktops
DH News Service New Delhi:
The battle against Microsoft intensified more on Tuesday as technology major Novell launched their Linux-based operating system and applications for enterprise servers as well as for desktops at a price lower than similar Microsoft products.

While the Novell open enterprise server can deliver file, print, management, collaboration and application services, the Novell Linux Desktop-9 – powered by SUSE Linux – comes with ready to use end-user operating systems, office applications and productivity tools.

Novell plans to launch the two products in ten other cities including Bangalore for catering to the increasing Linux market and informing their channel partners. In Bangalore, the products will be launched on April 28.

“Worldwide Linux market is growing by 25 per cent while in the desktop space the growth is 40 per cent every year. In India also, Linux is growing in the desktop segment,” Novell’s marketing director Ashit Panjwani told Deccan Herald.

While the desktop package comprising the operating system and applications like office package, Firefox browser and a package for e-mail, calendaring and task management cost Rs 4,000, the price tag is Rs 52,000 for enterprise servers.

The enterprise server package includes a suite of core networking services.
