Minimum wages sought for workers
DH News Service Chikmagalur:
The AITUC has urged for fixing minimum wages to plantation workers as they were harassed and ill-treated by their employers.

All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) has urged the government to fix and implement minimum wages for plantations workers.

In a statement, the district unit of AITUC said the estate owners were exploiting the plantation workers by disbursing low salaries as they (owners) were negligent to sign a new agreement.

The agreement of minimum wages of workers working in coffee, tea and rubber plantations ended in March 2002, the AITUC alleged.

The AITUC General Secretary K Gunashekharan said the government had issued a draft notification in March 2004 fixing basic salary as per the Minimum Wages Act and inflation index. However, it was delaying the implementation of minimum wages following pressure from estate owners, he charged.

The AITUC has also urged the government to include the plantation workers under Anthyodaya Anna scheme and BPL list.

Progress review

Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer M Manjunath reviewed the departmentwise progress of Prime Minister’s 15 point programme at a meeting convened at Zilla Panchayat auditorium here recently.

Officials of various departments provided the details about the implementation of the 15 points programme to the meeting.

The shemes for the 15 point programme include sinking of borewells for 10 beneficiaries under Ganga Kalyan Scheme, 16 pumpsets have been provided electricity out of the 30 applications received for the purpose and construction of 216 houses to beneficiaries belonging to minorities under Ashraya scheme.
