Dowry death: RI for the accused
DH News Service Kolar:
The first fast-track track has sentenced a man to 10 years of rigourous imprisonment holding him responsible for the death of his wife and their nine-month-old baby.

The man was sentenced for pestering his wife for more dowry.

Ramanna of Kadanahalli in Kolar has been identified as the prime accused while three others have been freed.

Ramanna had married N Narayanaswamy’s (of Beejagandanahalli) daughter Anjanamma in 1994. Narayanaswamy had given his daughter a gold chain, ring and some ornaments at the time of their marriage.

After their marriage, Anjanamma used to get harassed at her husband’s place for more money be it towards buying a tractor (Rs 50,000). Anjanamma’s parents could finally give them only Rs 30,000.

Anjanamma could not take the baby to her husband’s place even after nine months. Finally, she was escorted by her family members to her husband’s house when they demanded payment of the remaining amount of Rs 20,000.

Unable to bear the harassment meted out to her, Anjanamma killed herself after pouring kerosene over herself and her baby.

Both of them were admitted to S N Hospital in Kolar where they breathed their last in March 1996.

Police have registered a case.
