The All-India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) on Tuesday demanded the Union Government to fill up all the seats in the professional colleges based on merit only.
Speaking to the press here on Tuesday, AIDSO district Vice-President Santoshkumar M Hirve said, the Union Government should see to it that all the seats are distributed only on merit basis.
He said, the government should also fix the fees for the professional courses in such a way that it does not become a burden for the students, especially the poor students.
Towards this, the Union Government should immediately promulgate an ordinance fixing the fees, and to fill all the seats on merit bases, he added.
Mr Hirve said, moreover, until this ordinance was promulgated, the State Government should provide grants to the students to pursue their respective professional courses. He also asked stern action to be initiated against such professional colleges which violated the government directions.
He said, the AIDSO also urged the State Government to provide grants to private professional colleges, as was being done to the government professional colleges. Moreover, he also urged the government not to bend to the pressure tactics of private professional colleges, and fix high fees for the courses.
He said, a district-level connection was being held in Gulbarga on April 24, towards urging the Union Government to stop commercialisation of education, and to promulgate an ordinance towards protecting the interests of poor students.
A resolution regarding this would be passed at this convention, Santoshkumar Hirve added.
