The government has planned to take up 471 works related to lake development and construction of nala bunds in Belgaum district this year, according to Prakash Hukkeri, APMC and District Minister.
Speaking at a programme at Kalaskeri, near Basavankudchi, on Monday, Hukkeri said the Command Area Development Authority would take up the lake development and construction of nala bunds which would cost the government somewhere between Rs 2 and 3 crore.
He said the 471 works would help in the rehabilitation of about 5000 defunct borewells and open wells in parts of the district. He said the places would shortly be identified in the district and works would begin any moment.
Through 400 similar works last year, Hukkeri said, about 400 borewells and wells had been rehabilitated in the district. He said many drying water resources could be rescued by constructing nala bunds and developing lakes. He said a sum of Rs 8 lakh was being spent on development of the lake at Kalaskeri. A sum of Rs 4 lakh had already been released for the work and rest of the money would be released by the government soon, he assured.
He sought the support of villagers for the speedy completion of work on the lake and said the development of lake would help to overcome water problem in the village to a large extent.
M Maheshwar Rao, Deputy Commissioner, briefed on the importance of the lake development work at Kalaskeri and urged the villagers to utilise the water strictly for drinking water. S F Dodgoudar, President, Belgaum Zilla Panchayat said the villagers should take up measures to protect the lake for a long time and added that the maintenance of lake should be done well.
