Teen star Sania Mirza was on Tuesday night ruled out of Fed Cup women's team tennis competition with an ankle injury.
“The doctor said she is progressing well but they would need another 10-12 days to decide whether she can play or not," Sania's father Imran Mirza said. Sania's participation in the Fed Cup had already been already doubtful but the team was keeping its fingers crossed over her availability.
India are to play in the Group I tie of the Asia-Oceania zonal qualifiers which began on Tuesday, with the top team moving to the World Group play-offs.
Sania was diagnosedwith a tissue injury. "She underwent various tests including MRI and bone scan and was diagnosed to be having a soft tissue injury to the ankle," Dr K I Reddy, of the Apollo Hospital, said.
"Her progress would be reassessed after 12 days. In the meanwhile, she is advised against taking any stress," Dr Reddy said.
Sania is expected to travel back to Delhi to cheer for her teammates in the Fed Cup.
India will take on Singapore followed by matches against Kazakhstan and China.
