Ghanian recruit Benjamin Ansah's double strike in the first half guided Fransa Pax to their eighth win as they posted a 2-1 verdict over Churchill Brothers in the 18th round of the National Football League here on Tuesday.
Fransa dictated terms initially and man-of-the-match Benjamin struck in the third and 20th minutes.
Churchill, who mounted pressure in the latter part of the first half and the second half, lacked firepower and direction but they pulled one back five minutes before the final whistle when Marcos Pereira headed in off a Vanilal Rova pass.
The win took Fransa to fourth place with 29 points from 18 matches while Churchill, who are struggling to avoid relegation, suffered their ninth defeat and remained on ninth place with 17 points.
Fransa’s first goal came when Ansah beat diving goalkeeper Mark Mascarenhas with a left-footer from the top of the box off a Hardeep Saini pass. Ansah then followed it up with a superb goal, firing in a 25-yard left-footer off a Sebastiao Endro pass.
Second division
Madras Sports United thrashed Young Challengers, Pondicherry 8-1, to enhance their chances of qualifying from Group-VI of the Second Division National Football league in Chennai.
Playing their second match in the four-team group, the hosts produced attacking football from the start and went into the lead in the very first minute through Venkatesh, who excelled scoring four goals.
Pradeep Kumar (16th and 92nd), Bharath (30th), and Cleetus (40th) were the other scorers for Madras United.
In the 56th minute, Balaguru netted the consolation goal following a flag kick for Young Challengers, who have lost both their matches.
