Army XI edge past Airlines
Chennai, pti:
Olympian Sandeep Michael's superb hat-trick went in vain as Indian Airlines went down 4-5 to Army XI in their last league tie in the Murugappa hockey tournament here on Tuesday.

However, both Airlines and Army progressed to the last eight along with the Border Security Force and defending champions and IHF Juniors from Group D.

Former champions Railways will play Army XI and Airlines will take on a star-studded Bharat Petroleum in the quarterfinals on Wednesday. Tamil Nadu will clash with BSF and IHF will take on Air India in the last eight matches on Thursday.

Though, BSF drew one-all with the young and spirited IHF Juniors, the match between Army and the Airlines generated tremendous interest through out the match.

With both the teams boasting of Olympians in their ranks, Army led 2-0 through Ignace Tirkey and junior India player, Anup Kullu. In the 21st minute Michael got into the act by opening the account and completed his hat-trickafter the armymen scored two more goals through Ajit Kumar and Suresh Kumar. Michael in his inimitable style converted a corner in the 55th and then secured his third goal through a solo. Prabodh Tirkey netted the fourth goal for the Airlines.

In the other tie, BSF, who trailed by a Adam Sinclair goal (17th), equalised in the 33rd minute through Ranjit Singh.
