DH News Service Bangalore:

In response to the recent hooch tragedy, the State Government has fixed the responsibility of preventing distilling of spurious liquor on the district administration, especially Superintendents of Police concerned.
Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, who holds excise portfolio, held a meeting with top-ranking police officials in Bangalore on Tuesday and later told reporters that the police chief had been directed to issue circulars holding SPs responsible for preventing distilling of spurious liquor in the districts. Letters would be written to DCs too.
The government is also considering a ban on import of methyl alcohol - the main raw material in making spurious liquor - from other states and regulating its movement within the state, he said.
At present, it was imported mainly from Mumbai, he noted.
The State Government has asked officials to get more information from Tamil Nadu, which has reportedly banned methyl alcohol imports. He said those into sale of seconds liquor and arrack were now making spurious liquor after the government stopped the seconds menace.
Mr Siddaramaiah said the recent death of two persons in Bidadi after consuming liquor was not due to hooch. According to officials, the duo had died due to excessive consumption of rum.
Former judge of Karnataka High Court, Mr Justice A J Sadashiva, has agreed to head the judicial commission of inquiry into the hooch tragedy.
