On the royal ramp
S Lalitha
The launch of the stunning 2007-2008 Spring-Summer collection marked the birthday celebration of the scion of Mysore royal family Srikantadatta Narasimharaja Wodeyar at `The Palace’ on Tuesday evening.

The ‘traditional yet futuristic’ fashion line – the ‘Royal House of Mysore’ – was showcased by leading models from India and abroad. The line, launched with the objective of transforming the saree from a traditional attire to a new fashion statement, had both male and female models drape the colourful silk sarees in unconventional styles – like the Japanese Kimono, hip-hop Barbie, fisherwoman, Congo and Egyptian.

These creations of Wodeyar and his wife Pramoda Devi attempts to bring in a renaissance twist to Indian fashion. According to Wodeyar, “Our objective is to inspire people to try many different styles of tying a saree and show them that it can be carried off with equal grace and style.”

High-end designer sarees with rare and exquisite Babri motifs and floral patterns sashayed elegantly down the ramp. Much effort has gone into the ‘Ekadasha’ creations. The Wodeyars have done extensive research on the intricate patterns and colours mentioned in the sacred Hindu texts and relics.

Wrap-around skirts in chiffon, georgette and satin were inspired by the motifs of Indo-Aryan style and are ideal for social get-togethers. Cocktail dresses with exclusive cuts and evening gowns were also eye-catchers. A display of Indo-Western style of ghagras and wedding trousseau concluded the show.

The boutiques at the Mysore Palace and Bangalore Palace house these collections. The Wodeyars are also planning to launch an e-portal to reach out to the global audience.

The function also marked the launch of two calendars — the fashion calendar by Geetha Devi and the lunar calendar by Usha Devi. Dance performances by children sporting exquisite creations embellished with crystals went down very well with the audience. Some of Bangalore’s finest models including Jackie Shetty, Pashmina Barker and Roshan Issac walked the runway. Rachel from Delhi, Devdatta from Mumbai and Vyjayanti from Sri Lanka also displayed the sarees with great elan. The Russian dancers with their synchronised steps were the cynosure of all eyes. Dignitaries who attended the function included former deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, former ministers H Viswanath, Ambareesh and Nafeez Fazal. MLCs, DGP K R Srinivasan, actors Ramya and Waheeda Rahman and a sizeable number of foreign dignitaries were also present at the event.
