A street smart way to success
Arathi Menon
It’s not that hard to meet a CEO in his early 40s in this cyber city. So, when somebody introduces Vishal Dhupar as the CEO of Symantec India in Bangalore you wouldn’t give it a second thought. Know him more and reality surfaces. Unlike other CEOs, here’s a post-graduate from Bangalore University who achieved the same heights in an equally short time. In a close chat with Dhupar, Metrolife asked him what his secrets to success were and here’s what they are.

Being street smart... was very important to me at my first job at DCM Data Products in 1986. Bangalore had a very lazy style at that time and we had to sell computers. Selling a brand new product to those who hardly knew about it was very challenging. That’s when I realised how important it is to be street smart.

I got more worldly wise... through my childhood travels. My father was in the Army and that required us to shift base every time. Changing schools was very difficult for me as a child but it taught me important things in life.

My choice of career was unacceptable to my family... Most of my family members have an Army background or have been into civil service. So for them, a corporate job was unacceptable. My dad was more keen on me joining the Army. He was okay with private segment but there was no security. The initial years of my career were very ordinary. But the success I saw in later years gave them confidence in the choice I made.

Golf opens up my mind... and acts as a stress-buster. Moreover, two career defining moments in my life sparked off on the golf field. My Sundays are dedicated to golf and Saturdays to my beautiful wife Ruchika and two children.

Reading management books take me to next level of thinking... Jack Welch has been a great inspiration. ‘Built to Last’ and ‘Good to Great’ by Jim Collins are my favourite books. The other influences in my life were two of my bosses — Bijesh Wohani of DCM Data Products and Bhaskar Pramanik of Digital Equipment.
