If you are one of those who slip into nostalgia at the mention of olden goldies and if popular music of the 1960s turns you on, then Saturday night’s performance by the Aventur show choir from Finland would’ve left you craving for more.

The choir, flown in specially to perform at the 10th East West Encounter organised by the Bangalore School of Music, sang the best of Broadway musicals like ‘Evita’, ‘Chess’, ‘Rocky’, ‘Rocky IV’, ‘Cabaret’, ‘New York New York’ and ‘Sister Act’.

The impact of the ensemble, combined with choreography, worked on by the choir members themselves, was profoundly soul-stirring. The quick, precise and faultless moves in every song kept the spirits soaring. “I have always believed that singing and movement belong together. It helps the singers relax when they’re performing and it infuses a lot of energy into the performance,” Tapani Ruuska, the choir conductor, explains and adds that the choreography is done by the choir members because they knew the choir the best.

The 26-member choir is a mixed show choir with choreography, body percussion and music theatre included in its performances. It is a part of the “Luoteis-Helsinki” music institute in Helsinki, Finland. The group is popular across the globe for its musicals – cross-over, classical, folk and world music. The members perform either with special pre-recorded instrumental backgrounds, with piano accompaniment or acappella. “It’s the music that binds the choir. We are one of the very few choirs that mix dance and song. This arrangement is unique to our choir,” says Tapani.

Some of the other favourites sung by the choir were: ‘One Night In Bangkok & Bangkok’ from the musical ‘Chess’, ‘Don't Cry For Me Argentina’ and ‘Gonna Fly Now’ from ‘Rocky’ to mention a few.

The choir even sung the title song of ‘Kuch Naa Kaho’ in faultless Hindi. “Since we’re in India, we wanted to sing a Bollywood number. We had to work on the pronunciation and diction for a couple of weeks. But with help from Indian friends back home that wasn’t too tough,” explains Tapani.

This is the choir’s first India tour and the members confess to thoroughly enjoying their musical experience here. “Though the audience at each performance is different, the warmth of the people of this country runs through and through,” says Tapani.

Gauging the music sense of the City’s music freaks, Tapani says “though the people here are very interested in music, those educated in music and more well versed with the genre of music will enjoy the pieces we perform.”
