STUDYING IN INDIA
Dear Sir,

I am studying in II year (CBSE) PCMC. I would like to take up engineering after + 2. Which engineering field has better career opportunities? Want are the career opportunities in civil engineering and automobile engineering? Which are the colleges in Bangalore which offer automobile engineering?

Ritish,

Bangalore

Dear Ritish,

There is no such thing as a field with "better career opportunities", as opportunities keep changing from time to time and you will be working in your career for a span of 40 to 50 years. As a student of PCMC in your +2, taking up engineering will give you a good foundation if you have a mathe-logical mind, good analytical ability and are basically interested in technology. Civil engineering is an evergreen field which will continue to flourish even though it does not attract many youth today due to harsh working conditions compared to IT jobs. The same is true of the automobile sector. You should choose either of these if you have an interest and leaning towards these sectors. Otherwise you can take up a basic engineering course like mechanical, electrical, electronics, industrial, etc and then think of specialisation after your BE. Allotment of colleges in Bangalore or other places in Karnataka will depend on your CET ranking so it is too early for you to put your mind to it.

Dear Sir,

I am studying in Class XII - CBSE syllabus. I want to become a Company Secretary. Which are the good institutions in Karnataka for the same? What are the job opportunities available abroad after doing a CS? What is the percentage required in Class XII? What about the fee?

Sravanthi

Dear Sravanthi,

Company Secretary is a statutory examination conducted only by the Institute of Company Secretaries of India (www.icsi.org) in three stages. After your 12th you can enroll and appear for the Foundation course, and after graduation you can complete the final exams and the compulsory internship under a qualified company secretary. You can do your degree in any subject, and also the marks you score in your 12th are not important. The fee is very reasonable, and you can get details either on the website mentioned above or at their Bangalore office (3rd floor, Sheriff Chambers, Cunningham Road , B-52)

Dear Sir,

I have passed 10th. I wish to do a three-year Diploma (Polytechnic) or its equivalent course through distance education in Bangalore. Please give me details of such institutions.

KSS

Dear KSS,

The three year polytechnic courses are designed to give practical skills in technical fields and hence are not offered through distance education. If you wish to acquire qualification, you can enroll directly for a three year open university degree course (in Arts, Commerce, Management, Math, Computer Applications, etc.) when you reach the age of 18. Admission is in July every year through a simple entrance exam. In the meanwhile you should take up practical or job-oriented courses, at least the part-time ones, so that you acquire skills that will help you make a career.

Dear Sir,

I have done a five year Diploma in Art & Design after 10th and I am working part time in another field. I am interested in doing an MBA through Distance Learning. If I get admission which specialisation will suit my career?

Altaf S, Belgaum

Dear Altaf,

Unless your diploma is recognised by UGC as equivalent to a university degree, you will not be able to take up a recognised MBA course in any Indian university. However, foreign universities or autonomous colleges may consider you for a PG Diploma in Business Administration (PGDBA) which is considered in industry as equivalent to MBA. Your specialisation comes after the first two semesters, and you will be in a much better position to choose once you understand the basics of management. Also, since you have chosen the field of creativity and if you feel you are good at it, you can do further courses in visual communication, CAD, web-page design, animation, etc.

Dear Sir,

I am a commerce student, studying in an ISC institution of Bangalore. My subjects are Commerce, Accounts, Business Maths, Economics, Hindi and English. I want to be an architect, but I am unsure if I can still do Architecture as I have taken up commerce. Do I need to take any test to get admission into an architect college? Which are the institutions which offer architecture?

Ritika Agarwal

Dear Ritika,

All Architecture colleges in Karnataka affiliated to VTU have their intake through the CET exam for which only science students are eligible (followed by a separate aptitude test for architecture). You can consider other options in creative fields like interiors, landscaping, ergonomics, industrial design etc.

Dear Sir,

I am a BE (Mechanical), M.Tech (Tool Engineering), but I’ve still struggling to get job. Is there any institute/consultancy providing training in Tool Design and FEA Analysis package?

Lokesh Kumar

Dear Lokesh Kumar,

You are a post-graduate engineer and should have a very good future ahead of you. Yet, today's employers are looking beyond paper qualifications to see whether you can deliver results. You should list out your strengths and have a focus on what you are good at and what you enjoy doing. Possible areas would be production, planning, research, teaching, product development, marketing, market research, quality control, to name just a few. If you have a passion and can develop the confidence that you can do a particular job efficiently, then employers will not hesitate to take you. At the initial stage look for a job that furthers your ambition in terms of giving learning opportunities, and just do not bother about the salary being offered.
