                                            Birthday blues

The JD(S)-BJP government has completed an year in office on February 3. But most Deccan Herald readers have taken a dim view of the coalition’s performance. Its inability to focus on issues like graft has drawn flak. But the government’s attempts to improve infrastructure have drawn appreciation from all quarters. The poor governance is blamed on the allies’ obsession with their internal differences and politicking.

Miserable
The government has failed miserably to put an end to the corruption rampant in every department. There has been no initiative on the part of the government to check corruption. The CM is busy announcing populist schemes like waiver of farmer loans, free houses etc. But what has he to say about flourishing corruption in the state? Are we destined to live with this corruption no matter which party is on the ruling seat?
Benjamin Fernandez
Non-governance
The lack of proactive measures, intelligence, and willingness to solve public grievances was evidenced in this one year of governmentís performance. The handling of law and order situation in the recently held rallies shows the irresponsibility of the government. All the grandiose plans announced by the government for the benefit of the people seems to be a distant dream.
M S Sharada Prasad
Survival is the only achievement
The only achievement of the government is that the coalition has survived for one year despite its internal conflicts. The government should try concentrate on a few issues of importance like improving the power supply situation and an effective mechanism to control Bangaloreís chaotic traffic etc.
D B N Murthy
Inefficient government
The JD(S) and BJP coalition government promised the moon when it was formed an year back. The Chief Minister plans to waive off the loans by selling the encroached government lands. The Deputy Chief Minister who holds the Finance portfolio opposes it. Despite the assurances, farmer suicides go unabated. The bad condition of the roads, drinking water problem and the power crisis all reflect the inefficiency of this government.
On the whole, the performance of the government is below expectations. Full of promises and assurances and no deliverance.
S S Madhusudhana Murthy
Live up to expectation
The government should concentrate on proper governance and take up developmental works rather than spending too much time working on tactics to stay in power. They must understand that the government formation was not by any means with a mandate from the voters. The CM should deliver good performance by living up to the expectations of the people during his tenure, instead of wasting his time on internal conflicts. This will earn him the gratitude of the common public who will surely bring him back to power.
G V Narain
To woo voters
People are weary of the power- hungry Deve Gowda brand of politics. Disgusting as it is, caste politics in India is inevitable. However, the present alliance of the JD(S) and the BJP has fared much better than expected. The Chief Minister Kumaraswamy is trying very hard to do the balancing act and has weathered many storms. Most of the development work is underway, infrastructure is improving, fly-overs are being completed, roads are getting better and it seems that the government is keen to woo the voters and stay in power.
Kaveri Chinnappa
Pure disaster
Deve Gowda and sons party has plunged state politics to the lowest level. Deve Gowda betrayed Congress and made his son H D Kumaraswamy the chief minister. But he is unable to control the disgusting level of corruption and land grabbing. The law and order is in a bad shape as was seen by the handling of the recent riots in Bangalore. The infrastructure is also crumbling. Even the farmers are not getting a fair deal. To sum up, his tenure is a pure disaster for Karnataka.
Krishna R Kumar, Udupi
Better government
H D Kumaraswamyís views are quite different from that of Deve Gowda. Deve Gowda calls BJP as communal. But what is wrong in practicing Hindu religion when we are born as Hindus in India. BJP politicians are fairly disciplined and have many educated people. Power-hungry politicians say such things to hoodwink illiterate people to get votes, and act as traitors of the country. This is a better government when compared to earlier ones.
Manasa K
No progress
The city has not progressed much as the traffic scenario remains the same. The introduction of metro rail would not help much and would destroy the look and greenery of the city. Mono rail is the ideal bet for the city. Most of the storm water drains are left uncovered and it is strange that the government has done nothing in this regard. The drainage system in Bangalore is in the worst condition. Even slight rain results in the roads getting flooded.
Manu Nair
Perfect rapport
Kumaraswamy should continue to work in tandem with the BJP and not his father. The government should see to it that the promises made it are fulfiled during its tenure. Any government succeeds only when there is a perfect rapport between its coalition partners. There is a lurking fear among the people that the once the BJP takes over control during the later part of this year, the JD(S) may withdraw its support, stating that the coalition partner is not implementing the programmes initiated by them, to come back to power on its own strength.
Mrs Uttama Seshagiri
Unsatisfactory rule
It is too early to judge the joint action plans of the JD(S)- BJP combine. But it seems that most of the valuable time is being spent on their differences. In fact, their shortcomings count more than their achievements. People here have expected more action oriented plans from the young chief minister but he has failed 60 per cent. This fact is exemplified by the government ís failure to implement projects like drinking water scheme and the Bangalore-Mysore highway. At least in the coming years, we hope to see result oriented actions from this government.
A V S Shama Rao
Effective governance
In the present scenario coalition governments has become an inevitable reality both at the Centre and the state. Political parties of different ideologies and manifestoes have to have a common minimum programme to govern effectively. For different reasons both JD(S) and BJP have formed a coalition to rule the State. Although there are intra and inter party politics and conflicts, both have proved that they are capable of ruling the state effectively without any notable problems and complexities.
They have managed to place Karnataka on the world map as prominent investment friendly state. This has improved the socio-economic conditions of the state.
Srihari Sharma MJ, Mysore
It's communal rule
The JD (S) has changed colours from secular to communal because of itís association with the BJP and known communal party. The present government has not done anything new or laudable. They are just completing the projects the earlier government had done.
Now that the BJP has tasted power, it will undoubtedly saffronise the state wherever possible. The present government has not achieved much except that they held an assembly in Belgaum and Kannada Sahitya Sammelana at Shimoga.
But, the common man has not at all benefited from this government.
M S Khaleel
Wobbling continues
The present JD(S)-BJP combine has completed one year! That is the only achievement. The 12 months of wobbling continues without much promise.
Of course, the Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy has been struggling to project himself as an endearing leader by taking his folks to resorts, sleeping in villages, eating with HIV-AIDS patients, etc. But, for the common man, all these do not have any impact. As a tax payer, we want walkable pavements, clean garbage-free layouts, a good and equitable public distribution system, etc. Almost every day the coalition government airs differences before the media. This is what was happening for the last one year.
Mrs Tara Devi
So far so good
In Karnataka, we have a branded secular party in combination with a popular communal party. Therein, we have a budding political leader at the helm and a seasoned politician as a second in command. They have gone through many teething problems in justifying coalition, in forming firm government and in framing a common minimum programme. They have shown good juxtaposition, resilience and understanding. They have held high the Stateís image in the national sphere.
S S Ramanatha Rao
Mere gimmicks
Though the government has announced many dream projects like metro rail, monorail, ring roads, flyovers etc, the BMIC project has been messed up. If this is any indication we have to wait and watch whether and when these dream projects will be a reality. The government had not given due attention to power crisis and now state is moving towards darkness. Waiving off farmersí loans and banning of arrack sale were announced and now they are thinking of taxing the people for this which will not be acceptable. In short, it is more of gimmicks and lacking in foresight and action.
M K Visweswara.
Little achievement
The government is yet to find its feet in the administration of the state. There was conflict and confusion in forming the government, then came the issue of sharing of board/corporation chairs, they are not yet in a position to solve these. Instead of governing the state, the chief minister seems to be involving in political gimmicks like spending a day in SC/ST hut in a village or with the HIV infected people. They are talking big but finally comes close to achieving very little.
Mandikal S Ananda Rao, USA
Performance report
365 days in office, 365 felicitation functions attended, 365 plans and welfare measures announced, 365 oral promises made, 365 foundation stones laid, 365 visits to temples and maths. And the rate of tangible success is a dismal 3.65. This is the performance report of the JD(S)-BJP government after 365 days in office.
There is chaos and simmering differences in the JD(S), BJP and Congress circles. The BJP appears to be holding its cards close to its chest till it comes to power.
Vasanthkumar Mysoremath
Good rapport with people
The coalition government has developed a very good rapport with the people of Karnataka. It is in fact a pleasure to state that the coalition government have done undertaken many development works which are now in progress. This has indeed gained the government a good reputation among the public.
