Upset over the alleged censorship imposed by the Election Commission (EC) on one of its promotional films, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Saturday lodged a complaint against it for the curbs imposed on the party's election campaigning.
The party has complained against the censorship imposed by the EC on all three promotional advertisements on TV which it had send the EC for approval on April 29.
The promotional advertisement contains a message in Kannada by senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj on price rise and inflation. In her message, Swaraj blames the Central government and the Congress party for the inflation and mismanagement of the economy. However, the EC's order has prevented the BJP from criticising the Congress and the Central Government and holding them responsible for the price rise as it has electronically blocked the words 'Central Government' and ' Congress'.
BJP leader Arun Jaitely told reporters that the party would like to register its strong objection to this inexplicable act of censorship. "We believe that inflation and escalating prices of daily necessities are paramount issues before the country.
The EC order that all references to the Central Government and Congress be deleted as if they are unparliamentary expressions is unacceptable as we cannot blame the local municipality for the price rise but the Congress which runs the government," he said.
Though the party has continued to air the video in its present form with beeps in place of the words 'Central Government' and 'Congress', Jaitely stated that it will challenge the EC’s decision at an appropriate forum and has written a letter to the Chief Election Commissioner.
