Kanakapura is one among the high profile constituencies of the state. Post delimitation, profile of the constituency has changed.
Kodihalli, Uyyamballi, Sathanur hoblis which were earlier parts of Sathanur Assembly constituency and Kasaba hobli and Kanakapua Town Municipal Council are parts of the Kanakapura Assembly constituency.
Former minister PGR Sindhia who won from the constituency for six times is not in the fray this time. Senior leader of the Congress and former minister D K Shivakumar who won in the previous elections from Sathanur is contesting from Kanakapura. D M Vishwanath who contested against Shivakumar in the last elections is contesting on a JD(S) ticket. The fight is between these two candidates. S M Hampaiah of the BJP, Chinnaswamy of the BSP, B S Mahesh of the JD(U) and nine independents are in the fray.
The fight is between the Congress and the JD(S). For Shivakumar Kanakapura Town and Kasaba hobli are new areas. Both the Congress and the JD(S) are strong in Kanakapura town. In the last elections to the TMC, JD(S) won 16 seats, while the Congress won 14 seats. However the Congress succeeded to hold power with the support of JD(S) candidates.
Cong candidate Shivakumar is confident of winning majority number of votes in Kodihalli, Uyyamballi and Sathnur hobli which were parts of his previous constituency. This time he is concentrating more on votes in Kanakapura town. For the first time Shivakumar is seeking votes in a town. Being aware of the fact that it would be difficult for him if he neglects the voters of Kanakapura he has camped in the town for the last one month.
Over 45 per cent of total voters belong to Vokkaliga community. As prime contestants also belong to the same community, the votes will go divided. Candidates are making all efforts to woo votes of other communities as well. JD(S) candidate Vishwanath is banking on former chief minister H D Kumaraswamy’s fame in the election.
The BJP has fielded an outsider from the constituency. Local workers of the party are disappointed with the party’s choice. This time the Congress is worried of the BSP. Sindhia who won from the constituency for six times is national general secretary of the BSP. He has fielded Chinnaswamy as BSP candidate. His name may help the party gather a considerable amount of votes and prove problematic for the Congress. However Congress candidate Shivakumar brushes- off this theory.
D.K.Shivakimar will win from Kanakpura he has got a tactical understaning with PGR Sindhia that is why he has put a weak candidate If PGR scindia has contested the story would be different by the way where is PGR contesting from
