Being the self proclaimed funny people of the band, Vasu (lead vocals and rhythm guitar) and Jishnu (bass guitar and backing vocals) not just churn out good music but work as the comic relief during their regular jam sessions.
Pavan (percussions and backing vocals) and Montry (drums and percussions), a close second, follow with just the degree of humour varying. While Sanjeev (lead violin) is the serene, calming effect that this boisterous bunch need from time to time, Varun (lead guitar) is the face of the college student who loves his music just as much as his freedom.
When there are six people in a band, the camaraderie they need to bring about for themselves and their audience go beyond music. And when these people come together as Swarathma, after long hours at their respective jobs and studies, they create tunes that make them stand apart and above from the existing genre of bands. One of the few Hindi bands in the country, it is amazing that in a short span, they have managed to make a mark for themselves nationally. Bagging the top place at the RC Live contest, a nationwide hunt for India’s best Hindi band, held recently in Delhi, Swarathma did the City proud with their signature tunes.
With about five original songs (four in Hindi and one in Kannada) to their credit, the win provides them with an opportunity to release their first album with EMI. Requiring a total of about eight to ten songs, the team is gearing up for the big moment. “We are all set with the lyrics and the music and are looking forward to working on the album. It is a great opportunity for all of us and things are beginning to shape up,” shares Vasu who is the heart and soul behind the lyrics. “It’s all in my head. I never write them down, it is instead a result of the music and the moment,” he adds.
Not intending to classify their music into any genre, they agree that the purpose is to make music for anyone who wants to listen to it. “It is songs of experience and things around us. Which is why it is for the masses and we want everyone, from auto drivers to students and professionals, to relate to the music and enjoy it. That’s the main objective. We enjoy what we play and we hope that our audience can relate to that feeling as well,” says Jishnu after one of their bi-weekly jam sessions.
