A Parliamentary Committee has recommended setting up of a regulatory authority in shipping and ports sector, on the lines of regulators in telecom and insurance sectors, for fostering healthy competition and adjudicating disputes.
“Since much of activities in the port and shipping sector are taking place with private participation, there is need to establish a regulatory authority well in time, and that too before coming across any problem, for better control, coordination and monitoring for achieving excellence in port and shipping sector,” Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism & Culture observed in its report.
The department too has favoured a regulator at a later date as private ports were just coming in.
