Following the footsteps of the Indian Institutes of Management, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) might double the annual fees, provided the Centre gives its approval to the proposal.
A proposal to hike the fees in the IITs has been lying with the Human Resource Development Ministry for some time now and a decision is expected within a couple of weeks.
The IIT proposal pleaded that hiking the annual fees was necessary for augmenting financial health for the prestigious institutes.
The students in all the seven IITs are now paying Rs 25,000 per annum as fees. It could be increased upto Rs 50,000.The proposed fee structure, once accepted, will be implemented in the seven IITs. Over 4,000 students take admission to courses in the IITs at Kharagpur, Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi, Kanpur, Guwahati and Roorkee every year.

The move to hike the fee comes a few days after the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) decided to increase their fees for their two-year post-graduate programmes.
The move to hike the fee in IITs comes ahead of its entrance examinations on April 13 when about two lakh students would take the test to qualify for admission.
