Roddick set to tie the knot
World number six Andy Roddick is planning to marry 20-year-old model Brooklyn Decker.
“The couple wanted to tell their family and close friends first but good news travels fast,” said a note on Roddick’s website. “With their hectic travel schedules, Andy and Brooklyn plan to enjoy their engagement and will wait to set a wedding date.”
Idris may join as doubles coach
Badminton Association of India vice-president and former National coach TPS Puri said that Indonesian coach Hadi Idris is expected to come to India anytime soon and take over as the doubles coach, reports DHNS from Hyderabad. Two Chinese coaches are also expected to be signed up.
“Idris has been cleared by the government and two other Chinese coaches will also be roped in,” he said on the sidelines of the Indian Open Gold Grand Prix. “But things have not been finalised.”
It may be recalled that India was using the services of Indonesian Hadi Sugiyanto, who went back home all of a sudden.
Hyderabad to host ICL finals
The Indian Cricket League (ICL) announced that the second and third finals of the ongoing Edelweiss 20s Challenge will be held at Lal Bahadur Stadium on April 6 and 7, reports PTI from Hyderabad.
The first finals of the Edelweiss 20s Challenge will be played at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Chandigarh (Panchkula) on April 4, 2008, a press release said.
The second and third finals were earlier scheduled to be held at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Gurgaon but now have been moved to Hyderabad by the organisers.
The teams playing semi-finals are Lahore Badshas, Chennai Superstars, Hyderabad Heroes and Kolkata Tigers.
Nurudeen nets ONGC winner
Salau Nurudeen was on target as ONGC, Mumbai, claimed three points in their second Division National football league match against State Bank of Travancore on Tuesday, reports PTI from Pune.
Nurudeen scored the winner in the 29th minute from a flag-kick taken by Jatin Bisht. It was SBT’s second defeat in as many matches.
The win pushed ONGC up to third place, at par on points with Chirag United, who are ahead on goal difference.
Both SBT and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited lost their two matches and are fighting for survival in Group ‘A’.
Bindra no to top ICC post
Hours after South African Imtiaz Patel decided not to become the next CEO of the International Cricket Council (ICC), I S Bindra says he was also not interested in doing the top job, reports PTI from Mohali.
“At present I am happy working at the post that I am holding,” Bindra, who has been appointed as the principal advisor of the ICC, told reporters on the sidelines of launch of Mohali team Kings 11.
When asked that was it a step by Patel to accommodate him, he said, “I have got good understanding with Patel, but he is not accepting the post due to certain compulsions.
“I don’t want to become the CEO of the ICC,” he said adding “I have certain family commitments.”
Former wrestler arrested
A former national sportsman has been arrested for allegedly committing a robbery, police said on Tuesday, reports PTI from New Delhi.
Vikas Tomar (21), a national wrestler, was arrested near Apollo hospital in South district by sleuths from Special Cell of Delhi Police. Tomar, along with his associates Pradeep, Sandeep and Kailash, had allegedly committed a day light robbery at gunpoint in the office of a share broker in Chandini Chowk locality and looted Rs one lakh, police said.
Tomar had participated in National Wrestling Championships, they said.
Indian boys face tough task
India has been grouped with South Korea, Syria and Indonesia in a tricky pool at the AFC U-16 Championship to be played from October 4 to 19 in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, reports PTI from New Delhi.
Syria is a finalist from the 2006 edition of the event while South Korea is one of the powerhouses of Asian football. Colin Toal’s Indian boys need to reach the semifinals to make it to the next FIFA U-17 World Cup.
India open their campaign against South Korea on October 4, meet Syria on October 6 and face Indonesia two days later. Japan are the defending champions.
