The City-based National Institute of Engineering (NIE), which is known for its research facility and talent, has organised a six-day workshop for rural folk, imparting knowledge on various energy-based technologies. The workshop was inaugurated by Director N Ramanuja here on Tuesday.
The annual workshop will showcase simple instruments such as the Astra stove which emits more heat and uses less wood. This not only cuts down on the fuel used, but also speeds up cooking process.
There is also a biomass-based vegetables, nuts and fruits drier, which will find great applicability in boiling and drying betel nut, slices of fruits for powder among others. A bio gas unit using only kitchen waste has attracted a lot of attention even in urban areas as well.
No distinction
“ While there is no distinction between rural and urban technology, we have organised this workshop for the rural youth because they are less exposed to these innovations,” says NIE - Centre for Renewable Energy and Sustainable Technology Director Shamsundar.
The young minds from across the state who participated in the workshop were taught to make solar panels, coal cooker, tippy tap to conserve water, simple hand pump, rope and washer pump, spriny agriculture pump, mini flour machines using bicycles, etc. As part of their corporate social responsibility NIE also helps the rural youth to procure the materials used for these instruments and also market them.
