Raj glass house almost ready
Bangalore, dhns: The construction of Dr Raj Kumar glass house in the BBMP head office premises will be completed in the next two weeks.
BBMP Commissioner S Subramanya said work on the Rs 1.1-crore house was started in March 2007. It has a seating capacity of 1,000.
The commissioner, who inspected several works on Tuesday, directed officials to complete work on pedestrian subways near Town Hall and K R Market in the next three months. Work on these facilities is being taken up at a cost of Rs 2 crore and Rs 6 crore respectively, he said.
Sandalwood recovered
Mangalore, dhns: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence officials seized sandalwood and rosewood worth several crores, which was being transported to Dubai from NMP on Tuesday.
It was believed seven containers in the ship were booked by an agent to transport tiles to Dubai. However, one was found with sandalwood and rosewood logs. Highly placed sources put the value at Rs 5 crore. However, unconfirmed reports put the value of consignment at Rs 20 crore.
Ivory worth lakhs seized
Bangalore, dhns: The CID forest cell sleuths arrested two persons in Mangalore and recovered nine 9 kg of Ivory worth Rs 45 lakh from them. The accused are: Ibrahim (48) and Suresh (34), both residents of Madikeri. They were nabbed from Mangalore railway station. Though officials have yet to trace the origin of the ivory, they suspect it might be from Veeranahosalli in Hunsur forest range in Nagarahole National Park.
Cement worth lakhs damaged
Bangalore, dhns: Cement bags worth Rs 40 lakh were damaged while they were transported from Gulbarga to Bangalore.
Around 3,600 tonnes of cement belonging to Grasim India were transported in 58 open wagons at Malkheda Road railway station on March 25. But when the train arrived here, 700 tonnes (13,000 bags) were destroyed in the rain.
As per rules, the railways will not be responsible for the damage of goods transported in the open wagons. Further, the rules say the company or a person should take precautionary measures while transporting goods in open wagons.
Gokak gang in police net
Belgaum, dhns: Belgaum police arrested members of a notorious gang involved in serial killings, burglaries and many other heinous offences in various parts of Gokak.
On interrogation, they confessed to killing many besides indulging in collecting ransom, setting business establishments on fire, attacking people with acid, etc. The arrested are: Praveen Shankar Pujari, Vikas Tippanna Salunke, Manjunath Sutar and Uday Chigadolli, all from Gokak. Those who absconded are: Kedari Jadhav, Anand Holegar, Babu Nakati and Balachandra Banavi.
PU lecturer suspended
Bangalore, dhns: The PU Board has suspended lecturer Abdul Hamid Shet from Shimoga for remaining absent from duty during exams. A Board release said Shet, a commerce lecturer at Government PU College, Rippanpete in Shimoga district, was appointed as member of vigilance team at PU College, Katapadi in Udupi district. However, he did not perform his duty and remained absent.
