K Chandrashekar, former Basavanagudi MLA and former mayor, has earned kudos for making his constituency a model one in the City. This 47-year-old Congressman is unmarried and has no dependents on him. Still, he has liking for purchasing houses.

He has purchased four flats in some well-known residential areas of the city during his previous MLA tenure, from 2004 till October 2007, as per the declaration of assets he made to the Election Commission on Wednesday. He is seeking re-entry into the Assembly on the Congress ticket this time. He was corportor three times before becoming MLA.

In December same year, he purchased a 1,403 sq ft flat at Bysani Enclave in Shankarpuram paying Rs 22.82 lakh which will now fetch about Rs 44.20 lakh.

Couple shock

The Returning Officer of Mahalakshmi Layout was in for a rude shock on Wednesday when JD(S) candidate Gopalaiah’s wife Hemalatha too filed the nomination papers along with the husband.

When Ms Gopalaiah started filing the papers, the RO and his sub-ordinate officers were left wondering as to who is the official candidate. On learning about it, police personnel outside the RO office started speculating that Hemalatha may be standing as an independent against her husband.

Sensing the confusion around, Gopalaiah voluntarily announced that he himself asked his wife to file the papers. “It is a belief that there should always be two things at a time and not one. Single thing is not considered as good sign. Hence, I asked my wife also to file the nomination papers with me. But I am the official JD(S) candidate. She will later withdraw her papers,” he stated.

Gopalaiah is worth around Rs 2 crore, and no case is booked against him, according to affidavit filed along with his nomination papers on Wednesday. He has a cash of Rs 75,000, bank balance of Rs 47,000, savings through LIC around Rs 17 lakh and jewellery worth Rs 20,000. He owns a building in Kamakshipalya worth Rs 1.18 crore. He does not own any land and vehicle.

Gopalaiah’s liability is Rs 1 crore.
