A typical week in the lives of students of architecture contains at least three consecutive submission deadlines, an average of four hours of sleep a night, research-intensive projects and precious little free time. In the words of a student, “given our habitual inability to meet submission dates, organising the R V School of Architecture Annual Exhibition 2008 in the summer semester — in our spare time — seemed almost impossible.
To us, the Annual Exhibition is much more. Faced with the challenge of organising it ourselves - from cleaning studios to finding sponsors, from inviting architects to balancing budgets on the tips of our noses - the Exhibition is a celebration of our intended profession, of the work we spend the largest portion of our lives doing. It is, above all, the chance to open our doors to exhibit our creative output to architects, fellow students and anyone else who may wish to trace the development of an architectural idea in the studio. As third-year students closely involved in organising the Exhibition, we find ourselves able to clearly trace the early beginnings to the last details of the arrangements on the day of the Exhibition.''
As Dr K S Anantha Krishna, Professor and our Head of Department at R V School of Architecture, explains, “The B Arch course is burdened with regular work, especially Architectural Design, and hectic semesters. This
being the case, a necessity for a change from the routine arises.''
“We were willing to bunk classes to attend budgeting meetings, stay back late to discuss plans for the special Exhibition Space — to exhibit the best work done over the past year — to be erected atop the terrace and miss submissions (usually held sacred) in favour of meeting sponsors. Ask us what we have enjoyed most about the process, and our answer is unanimous: working as a team,'' was the unanimous view of the students.
The R V School of Architecture Annual Exhibition 2008 is two days away yet, the students can't wait to sink their teeth into next year's Annual Exhibition.
