Unique wood carvings
Abhilash V
S Seetharamu, retired General Manager of Syndicate Bank is holding an exhibition of his works at Venkatappa Art Gallery till April 28 whose works include pencil sketches, computer paintings, clay paintings and an array of carvings of different types of wood.

‘Creativity has no limits’. This statement was justified by S Seetharamu, retired General Manager of Syndicate Bank who is holding an exhibition of his works at Venkatappa Art Gallery till April 28. Passionate about arts and crafts, Seetharamu began displaying his artistic talents 25 years ago and today he has carved a niche for himself through unique wood carvings.

The exhibition was inaugurated by C P Swarnkar, Chairman and Managing Director of Syndicate Bank and the guest of honour, renowned artist, BSK Varma. The exhibits were thrown open to public and Seetharamu personally escorted the visitors around the works.

His works include pencil sketches, computer paintings, clay paintings and an array of carvings of different types of wood. He has transformed bamboo roots into tribal heads, human-headed snake figures and wood of teak and white sandal have been used to carve chairs, bowls and other intricate wall-hangings. ”My works are inspired by everything around me,” says Seetharamu. “Sometimes I see a discarded log or a chip of wood and I imagine shapes before I begin working on them.”

The works have a touch of elegance and considering Seetharamu is a self-trained artist, each piece of art stands out by itself. The figures are carved not out of inspiration, rather fascination of human figures.

How difficult was it managing a job and a hobby that required time and patience? “It’s all about passion and priority,” replies Seetharamu.”If you are passionate about your hobby you will find time for it, nothing can come in your way.” And does he see himself hosting another exhibition? “Of course, now that I’m retired, I will be devoting all my time to the hobby,” he adds with a smile.
