Genetic status of foetus
Thousands of babies are born every year with genetic disorders due to which they become mentally and sometimes physically challenged. According to Dr Lekha Pandit, Neurologist in KSHEMA, these disorders can be identified as early as 12 weeks of pregnancy by a series of blood tests of the mother.
“If the first child in a family has some kind of genetic disorder, there is a chance that the second child to have a similar disorder. In that case, the parents can vent their anxiety by undergoing this particular test and be sure whether their child is going to have any disorder, when it is still young in the womb. This also enables them to take a decision whether to have the baby or not”, Dr Lekha explained.
Dr Lekha has done extensive and original research in this field and hopes that the research would further enable the medical fraternity to correct the genetic disorders of the foetus right inside the womb. The facility which is now available in KSHEMA is the first of its kind in South India, Dr Lekha added.
