DCP (Central Division) B N S Reddy told Deccan Herald that Mohammad Ullu Hussain, a resident of Molakalmuru near Chitradurga, was nabbed.
Mr Reddy said the accused used to inform unemployed graduates that he was a senior manager in software companies such as Wipro and HCL and download the company logo from the internet. He reportedly had logos printed on fake letterheads and promised jobs.
“The accused is a resident of M S Palya, who was to get married to an MCom graduate on April 17. He used to ask youths to come near the Wipro office branch, collect money and then vanish without a trace. Interestingly, his father Mohammad Hussein was a gram panchayat member at Chitradurga.
His elder brother Firoz Ahmed was offered employment on compassionate grounds. The accused accepted dowry to the tune of Rs 8 lakh after informing his in-laws he is drawing a salary of Rs 1 lakh. He was employed in a private firm at Peenya,” Mr Reddy said.
The Cubbon Park police registered a case of cheating against the accused based on a complaint from Bharat.
The complainant was allegedly cheated of Rs 73,000 on March 5 after he was asked to come near Wipro office at Church Street.

Added Mr Reddy, “He used to prepare a set of questions and hand them over to job aspirants and ask the youths to come to the branch offices of Wipro for a phone-in-interview based on the questions. Once the amount was handed over, he would escape. Hussein would also change his SIM cards frequently to avoid being traced. He disclosed that he has cheated only one person. We suspect more people to be cheated by him.”
Police said more youths are likely to come out and lodge complaints of being cheated in the coming days.
