Indian skipper Anil Kumble said that his side had the potential to come up with a strong performance irrespective of the combination they would field in the second Test against South Africa, beginning at the Sardar Patel stadium here on Thursday.
"I think whatever combination we have, we have potential and quality to do the job. We have worked out some plans to ensure that we put pressure on South Africa and, hopefully, we will get the right result," Kumble said at the pre-match press do on Wendesday.
The fitness of Kumble and pace bowler Ishant Sharma has been a subject of debate over the last few days. But Kumble said a final call on their fitness will be taken only on the morning of the match day.
"We will just have to wait. We have some more time before the Test match so we will take a final call tomorrow morning," he said before adding that his injured right groin was feeling a lot better. The veteran leggie said that the injury worries have delayed the decision on team combination as well. "We still haven't decided on team combination because there are a couple of injury concerns. We will wait till tomorrow morning before taking a final call in that regard," he said.
But he hinted that there will be a promotion in the batting order for VVS Laxman. "He will certainly come up the order," he said.
Kumble made light of South African threat of employing short-pitched balls against Virender Sehwag, who made a triple hundred in the Chennai Test. "I think Sehwag is a good enough batsman to handle. He scored 319 runs in his last innings and he is capable of handling whatever comes his way," he said.
The question about pitch elicited a sharp response from Kumble. "I don't want to talk about the pitch because there are too many questions and answers are very little, so let's wait."
