Chetan Anand, it seems, is a determined player. It would be easy to arrive at that conclusion going by the way he played in the pre-quarterfinals of the Indian Open Gold Grand Prix badminton here on Thursday.
The 15-21, 21-16, 21-15 win over Taipei's Yu Hsin Hsieh, who is ranked No 53 in the world as compared to Chetan's 71 in the rankings released on Thursday, showed he still has it in him to produce some stunning results. The win is likely to take him up in the world rankings.
There was more to cheer in the Indian camp as Anand Pawar beat Malaysia's Kay Bin Yeoh 21-16, 21-19 in another pre-quarterfinal match. JBS Vidyadhar, however, was beaten by third-seeded Yu Chen 17-21, 15-21.
Earlier, Saina Nehwal, Aditi Mutatkar and Gayatri Vartak bowed out in the pre-quarterfinals in the women's singles event. No sooner had Saina lost 15-21, 10-21 to Japan's Eriko Hirose, Aditi and Gayatri fell too.
Aditi would be one dejected player after her 21-18, 20-22, 11-21 loss to Hong Kong's Pui Yin Yip, the World No 12 and the seventh seed here. The Prakash Padukone Badminton Academy trainee in Bangalore had her rival on the mat after she won the first game and up 18-11 in the second. The game was going very well indeed for Aditi till then. The Indian was going for her shots and winning points too.
At the same time, she gave away too many high returns and it was a job made easier for Pui. More than just giving away points, it appeared she had mentally lost it too. Any hopes of a resurgence were shut out as Pui was in top form in the decider.
Saina was a disappointment on Thursday. There was none of the spirit she showed against Japan's Yu Hirayama on Wednesday. Eriko looked supremely confident and the demolition job lasted a mere 33 minutes.
Gayatri was beaten by Malaysian Julia Pei Xian Wong 16-21, 17-21.
In a major upset in a late match on Wednesday night in the men's section, the second-seeded Jin Chen from China lost to Malaysia's Wei Feng Chong 23-25, 21-12, 16-21. On Thursday, Korea's Sung Hwan Park (fourth seed) and Malaysia's Choong Hann Wong (sixth seed) also crashed out.
In the first round of the men's doubles event, India's Akshay Dewalkar and V Diju scored a 21-16, 11-21, 21-12 win over Chieh Min Fang and Sheng Mu Lee in a late night match on Wednesday.
India's other doubles pairs - Alwin Francis and Shankar Gopan, Arun Vishnu and Tarun K - lost in the first round. The big names to go out were Rupesh Kumar and Sanave Thomas, who lost to Choon Eng Chew and Chong Ming Chan 19-21, 23-21, 12-21.
