Were not married: Sanjay, Manyata
DH News Service, Mumbai:

A woman sporting bright-red sindoor on her forehead and wearing a mangalsutra might be considered married, but Manyata Dutt — who had claimed just a few days ago that she had married Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, now says she is not wedded to him.

The couple dropped the bombshell at the Bandra sessions court, saying they are not married and are just “staying together”. Manyata is facing a bigamy complaint from her first husband Meraj-ur-Rehman Sheikh, an undertrial lodged in jail charged for sending obscene SMSes to Bollywood actresses.

When the couple wed in February, he had claimed that Manyata was still his wife. Marrying someone else before dissolving the first marriage is a criminal offence under the IPC, carrying a maximum of 7-years’ jail term.

Sanjay and Manyata who moved the sessions court with a revision application said, “For the prosecution to prove a bigamous marriage, it is necessary that the alleged second marriage be valid. In the absence of any such evidence, there is not even a prima facie case of bigamy disclosed.”
