Notwithstanding pitched black flag demonstrations by Save Farmland Committee members at more than two places, Lord Swraj Paul of Caparo Group of the UK said here on Tuesday that the Caparo plant coming up near Tata Motors main factory for Nano, would be completed as per scheduled.
Lord Paul who paid a visit to the factory site, was greeted with demonstrators hoisting black flags who demanded that the farmland ‘forcibly acquired’ for the Rs one lakh car, ought to be returned.
Heavy police deployment at Singur and along the route of Lord Paul’s motorcade thwarted the demonstrators’ plan to obstruct his visit. According to Lord Paul who has been putting up an auto body manufacturing facility in close proximity to the main car plant, the project would benefit the locals. “The car project will be beneficial for the locals as it would generate a lot of employment locally,” he said.
The NRI business tycoon Lord Swraj Paul who led a UK delegation to the city here, stressed that industrialisation is key to improving economic prosperity of locals.
“I believe there is no other option, but to industrialise... We will have to industrialise and work for a better world. And Singur is a good beginning,” he said after visiting Tata Motors and Caparo Engineering’s plants here. Caparo Engineering India, the Indian subsidiary of the Caparo Group, has been implementing the project that will manufacture Nano’s body. The Caparo plant is expected to start production around same time Tata Motors is likely to begin which is in the second half of this calendar year.
