HC admits PIL on lakes
The High Court admitted a PIL against privatisation of lakes. The Bench comprising Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph and Justice Ravi Malimath, who heard the petition submitted by the City-based NGO Environment Support Group, has issued emergent notices to the respondents.
The group, in its petition, has questioned the action of the Lake Development Authority (LDA), saying that the privatisation of these water bodies is against the norms related to management and conservation of these ecologically-sensitive water bodies, which host wildlife.
Seeking the High Court’s intervention in quashing the lease deed executed by LDA, the petition pointed out that the water bodies, which were rejuvenated just a couple of years ago, have been handed over to private profit-making entities under the guise of rehabilitating, restoration and maintenance - a matter against norms of Conservation of Wetlands in India, a profile issued by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests.
