The Indo-US civil nuclear deal is likely to dominate the monsoon session, to start from Friday, as the Opposition BJP and supporting group of Left parties are set to grill the UPA government on the bilateral accord.
In a bid to ensure harmony during the month-long session, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on Thursday night convened an all-party meeting. The BJP has already indicated that it wants a discussion on the nuclear agreement followed by voting. The Left too wants a discussion but is unlikely to press for voting. The Left is already agitated over the deal which it has outrightly rejected but its constituents CPM and CPI gave mixed signals on how they would react to a discussion on the issue under a rule which entails voting.
The BJP is bolstered by the stand of the Third Front which also demanded voting after a debate on the deal to “show who stood where”.
In all, the session is expected to be stormy, not only because of this pact but also because of other political events which took in the recent past.
