Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Thursday said that Mahatma Gandhi’s message of non-violence and peace would be relevant all over the world till there was injustice, inequality and greed in human society.
“His message had a global relevance and continues to do so in our troubled times. As long as we live in a world where there is injustice, inequality, violence, greed and hatred, the message of the Mahatma will ring true for all,” the Prime Minister said while releasing a book on Gandhi.
Call for Satyagraha
The book, Gandhian Way: Peace, Non-Violence and Empowerment, comprises the deliberations of the international conference earlier this year commemorating the centenary of Gandhi’s call for Satyagraha, in which world leaders like Nelson Mandela, Lech Walesa, Mohammad Yunus, Kenneth Kaunda and Archbishop Desmond Tutu had participated.
Recalling that Mahatma Gandhi had used Satyagraha as a means to arouse the latent energy of people to fight for their liberation from humiliation, Dr Manmohan Singh said he was proud that Congress had taken the initiative in order to commemorate its centenary.
Non-violence day
The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to the rest of the world for backing a resolution moved by India at the United Nations to declare October 2, which is the Mahatma’s birthday, as the International Day of Non-Violence.
