Your (DH 7th Aug) timely and scholarly article on SSCP was educative. We have no right to invade into the natural habitat of millions of aqua lives. Disturbing geodiversity for human comfort is a crime. You have rightly pointed to the poor economic sense in this project. More relevant is your headline suggesting that the SSCP is anti-religious.
It is true that millions of hearts are with the bridge that was built by the Apes lead by Lord Hanuman. One may severe the bridge but not this faith. The launchers of the project knew well that they were defacing this old and respected monument of this land. They even named the project as Sethu Samudram Canal Project (SSCP).
Consequently it is reasonable to expect they also knew the hurt that the millions of believers experience. There were sound alternatives available. Yet the ministry has gone ahead with the project unmindful of the sentiments of Hindus.
Contrast this with the Hazarat Bal episode of Kashmir some years ago. Why can't Hindus be treated with dignity on par with others in this secular land? Protest fast is scheduled on Sunday the 12th Aug in different parts of the city. There is a mass protest rally on 26th at Rameshwaram. The movement would receive unprecedented support for two reasons; SSCP is hurting the Hindu sentiments and stopping this will not hurt any other religions.
