Kids out for a good reading

The cosy children’s section of Easy Library in Koramangala, recently played host to a story hour.

The session was part of the ‘Read On’ segment at the library, which will be a regular feature here. These sessions will have story telling to create interest in good books among children.

Last week, Darius Sunawala, a former RJ and the current programming director of Fever 104 FM introduced children to Terry Pratchett and also read from the Puffin Book of World Myths and Legends by Anita Nair. Darius first got the children to warm-up with a couple of jokes and funny introduction sessions. Not only that, he managed to hold their attention by asking them questions. ‘What is a myth?’ ‘What is a religious story?’ ‘What is a constellation?’ Pat would come the answers for each of his questions. All the kids were below the age of 12 and yet, each one knew the answer to questions even before adults could come up with them!

The first story Darius read from was The  Carpet People by Pratchett. With voice modulation, Darius read animatedly from the book keeping the children enraptured. At the end of a chapter, he stops dramatically and looks up at the children. “if you want to know more, pick up the book and read it” he says with a smile. He then moved on to Myths and Legends, deciding first on an Egyptian one.

‘How Isis became a constellation’ spoke of Ra and Isis and got the children talking about immortality!

The next pick, ‘How Mt Fuji became a Volcano’ had the kids eagerly raising their hands to answer what a volcano is. And after a cute little girl finished her explanation on magma, Darius had to resolve to a “In the days that this story was written, they didn’t know much about science so they had different ideas, so let’s see what they thought!”

Answering a question, says Darius, “I think kids these days read enough... just not enough books!” “I love kids and a session like this is so de-stressing! I picked Terry Pratchett because amongst my favourite authors I thought, his books would be something the children could also enjoy,” he added.

The library is located in Koramangala and can be reached at 2550 1499 or access it at easylib.com.
