Bangalore alone contributes 60 per cent of India’s garment exports and the City’s apparel market is growing at the rate of 65 per cent per year.
Adding another feather to the crowded crown of achievements that the City wears, this bit of information was made available at the recently held South India Garment Association (SIGA) 2007 organised at the Koramangala Indoor Stadium.
Over 75 companies participated in the 13th edition of this annual event, held for garment manufacturers and retailers. While participants put up their stalls displaying their works, a fashion show was held where models showcased the latest collections of the participants and new entrants into the Bangalore apparel market.
From nightwear, formal menswear to casual wear — a variety of garments were showcased. SIGA is held every year in Bangalore as it’s at this time that garment manufacturers and retailers do 90 per cent of business. Anurag Singhla, secretary, SIGA 2007-09, said, “This year we are looking at a business turnover of Rs 100 crore. Thirteen years ago, the turnover was just one-hundredth of it. Bangalore has become one of India’s largest exporters, contributing 60 per cent of India’s exports. This industry has employed 10 lakh people in Bangalore, whereas the software industry employs only four lakh.”
The three-day event aimed at achieving a target of US $50 billion by 2010 through garment exports.
