Michelangelo Antonioni, one of the most famous Italian filmmakers of all time, died on Monday at the age of 94.
Antonioni’s career, that spanned more than six decades, included Oscar-nominated Blowup and the internationally acclaimed L’Avventura (The Adventure). One of the most international and politically minded of modern Italian filmmakers, Antonioni achieved fame in the 1960s and early 70s.
After several years working with the greatest names of the Italian postwar neo-realist movement, he won acclaim with a succession of triumphs exploring what he saw as the emotional sterility of modern society.
