Bronze for Anju
New Delhi, PTI:
Anju Bobby George finished third in the womens long jump at the Bayer Meeting 2007 in Leverkusen, Germany.

Anju Bobby George finished third in the women’s long jump at the Bayer Meeting 2007 in Leverkusen, Germany on Friday.

Anju cleared 6.51M, well below her season’s best of 6.65M.

Naide Gomes of Portugal claimed the top honours with 6.83M while Bianca Kappler of Germany finished second with 6.73M.

Anju started with an effort of 6.48M but slid down to 6.39M in her second jump.

The lanky Keralite evoked hopes of a better finish when she managed 6.51M, but she could not better that in her subsequent efforts. She did her cause no favours registering foul jumps in her fourth and fifth attempts and finished with 6.48M in her final attempt.

Gomes was in top form and apart from her winning effort, registered 6.81M twice, 6.69M and 6.60M.Local favourite Kappler was also considerably ahead of the Indian and backed up her best jump of 6.73M with attempts of 6.66M and 6.53M to leave Anju far behind.
