Karnataka Chief Justice Cyriac Joseph called upon the Legal Service (LS) Authorities and Committees of the sSucating public as to serious social menaces like corruption and drug addiction among youth.
He was speaking after inaugurating the seventh annual conference of the chairpersons and member secretaries of District Legal Service Authorities, and chairpersons of Taluk Legal Service Committees across the state, organised in Bangalore on Saturday.
Acceptable fact
“Corruption is becoming an acceptable fact in society and it is worth doing a survey as to whether the traditional concept that women are less prone to corruption still holds good,’’ the Chief Justice said adding that legal awareness could help in reducing corruption.
Increased number of youth are reportedly falling prey to drugs and legal service units can address this issue through their Student Legal Literacy Clubs set up in educational institutions, he suggested.
Cyber crimes
High Court judge Justice S R Bannurmath said, there was a need to educate public as to the cyber crimes that are on a rise owing to technological advancement.
Legal service authorities also need to highlight people’s role in ensuring societal health and law and order by assisting the functioning of criminal justice system, he said.
High Court Legal Services Committee chairman Justice K L Manjunath said : “Since several appeals might arise out of one litigation, if a litigation is settled amicably at lower court level, pressure on higher courts is also reduced.”
“Hence, Lok Adalats should be held more frequently at district level to resolve more disputes, harmoniously.’’
