Rooney out for two months
Manchester United striker Wayne is likely to be out of action for two months after breaking his left foot against Reading on Sunday. Rooney will miss England’s two Euro 2008 qualifiers next month, but United manager Alex Ferguson said the striker could be fit in time for the tie with Estonia on October 13. Rooney had also broken a bone in his right foot during Euro 2004.
Atwal finishes tied 21st
Riding on a birdie spree, Arjun Atwal carded a three-under 68 on the final day and vaulted to tied 21st at the Northeast Pennsylvania Classic on the Nationwide Tour in the United States, reports PTI from Moosec.
Atwal birdied the fourth, sixth, 10th and 16th and his sole bogey of the day came on the ninth.
Atwal, however, moved just one spot on the money-list from 46 to 45th.
Justin Bolli, who has been close to a win a few times this season birdied the 16th and 18th holes to win by one stroke over Richard Johnson and Patrick Sheehan.
Anand, Sasi for Chess Classic
Viswanathan Anand would like to maintain his numero uno position when he starts his campaign in the 14th Chess Classic, the biggest rapid chess festival in the world, on Monday, reports UNI from Mainz.
Apart from the World No one Anand, the other Indians in the fray are Krishnan Sasikiran and Pentala Harikrishna. The world’s youngest Grandmaster from India’s Parimarjan Negi will compete in the Mini Ordix.
Anand, who has won the title for a record of nine times, is the favourite to win the title again.
Akhtar appeals against fine
Pakistan fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar has appealed against the penalties imposed on him for indiscipline last week by the Pakistan Cricket Board, reports Reuters from Karachi. Akhtar was fined $5,000 for two breaches of the players' code of conduct. He left a training camp in Karachi without informing the team management.
He was also docked 1.5 points from the total of 20 points available to the players for discipline in their central contracts.
“We have got an appeal from Shoaib in which he wants the penalties imposed on him reviewed again,” PCB chief executive Shafqat Naghmi said on Monday.
Mickelson for Singapore Open
World number three Phil Mickelson will warm up for his Champions Tournament debut in Shanghai by playing at the Singapore Open, reports Reuters from Singapore.
“We are delighted Mickelson has chosen to make his Asian Tour debut at the Singapore Open,” a tournament spokesman said in a news release.
The American left-hander joins 2005 and 2006 winner Adam Scott, world number four Ernie Els and US Open champion Angel Cabrera in the field at Sentosa’s par-71 Serapong championship course from November 1-4.
World number seven Vijay Singh, former US Open champion Michael Campbell, European Ryder Cup stalwart Darren Clarke and Japan’s Shingo Katayama will also feature.
Harinakshi to lead State side
Harinakshi will lead a 16-member Karnataka squad in the 4th South Zone sub-junior women’s hockey championship in Thiruvananthapuram from Aug 17-19, reports DHNS in Bangalore.
