Indian skipper Rahul Dravid vindicated his decision to not to enforce the follow-on, saying that he has to back his judgment as the captain of the team.
"I have to back my judgment and that is what I earn my corn for. I know there will be difference of opinions about what is wise and what is not wise. But as the captain of the team I know my players quite well, I know the dressing room pretty well and I know the workload my bowlers had been through.
“It is the third Test of the three-match series and we have played the same bowling attack right through the series. I know people might have wanted us to enforce the follow-on. May be if I was sitting in a living room or drawing room I might have said the same thing," Dravid said here on Sunday after winning the series 1-0.
"You know as a captain I get the pulse of what is happening in the team, the feeling of the team and the mood of the boys in terms of how much I can push them, how much I can't push them, what is the right thing to do what is not the right thing to do. At that time, I felt that pushing my boys through that kind of workload is not the right thing to do, give them a bit of rest and then comeback fresh in the fourth innings and that is what they did today and they gave a great performance," he added.
Michael Vaughan, his England counterpart, too agreed to that point. "I would have done the same thing if I was in Rahul's place. Perhaps, with the series in the kitty, they wanted to ensure that the job is done," he said.
On winning the series, Dravid said, "We are very proud for the whole team for what they have achieved. It does not happen all the time, as in all the three visits, it is only the first time we have managed to pull off a series win. I could not be more proud as a captain to lead a fine team," he said.
"I think it is a very fair result. England dominated the first Test and we dominated the next two, and we played better in crucial moments. It gives us a lot a satisfaction. This is a very special moment for us. We have not done well away from home and then come here and do well against England where they have been traditionally strong, yes, definitely it is right up there in my achievements," the Bangalorean said.
Fine work by support staff
On the role of the support staff, he said, "We have not had a coach in the conventional sense, but we have Venky and Robin and Greg King who really helped us out with getting all the boys ready and Borde too chipped in with his advices. I think we have a great backroom staff, and in the end the result shown."
Zaheer Khan was adjudged man of the series, while Anil Kumble bagged the man of the match award.
