An epidemic, says fiery McEnroe
John McEnroe, the American legend, has said the late withdrawal of leading tennis players from WTA tournaments has reached epidemic proportions. “It’s an epidemic in the women’s game,” McEnroe said in Toronto on Monday. “The men aren’t as bad, but it certainly has been an issue. It’s not one person’s fault. It’s not just the players, so it’s not just the tournament’s fault.”


India climb to third place
India have moved up two places to third in the International Cricket Council's Test rankings following their series win in England, reports Reuters from London.

India won the three-match series 1-0 after the final Test at The Oval was drawn on Monday.
Rankings: Australia (141 pts) 1; England (111) 2; India (107) 3; Sri Lanka (107) 4; South Africa (102) 5; Pakistan (99) 6; New Zealand (99) 7; West Indies (72) 8; Bangladesh (4) 9.

Jeshwant comes in for Ashokanand
Former Karnataka skipper and coach Karthik Jeshwant has replaced Ashokanand in the four-member senior cricket selection committee, reports DHNS in Bangalore.

Ashokanand, who was also the chairman of the committee, resigned last week from his post. Another selection committee member Raghuram Bhat has been elevated to the post of chairman. J Abhiram and PV Shashikant are other members of the panel.

Collins back in Windies squad
Left-arm fast bowler Pedro Collins has been recalled to the West Indies squad for the Twenty20 World Cup after a year in the wilderness, reports Reuters from Bridgetown.

West Indies squad: Ramnaresh Sarwan (capt), Chris Gayle, Shivnarine Chanderpaul, Devon Smith, Marlon Samuels, Runako Morton, Denesh Ramdin, Dwayne Bravo, Darren Sammy, Dwayne Smith, Ravi Rampaul, Daren Powell, Fidel Edwards, Narsingh Deonarine, Pedro Collins.

Six State skaters in Indian team
Four boys and two girls from Karnataka have been selected for the Indian team which will take part in the World Track and Road Speed Championships at Calicity (Colombia) from August 17 to 25. Vishwanath Shetty has been named the manager of the Indian team.

Boys: Rohan Ramnath, Vikram BJ, Adithya S, Rakshith Gowda. Girls: Shipra Shetty, Nityashree.

Asia Cup hockey advanced by a day
The Asia Cup hockey tournament for men, scheduled to be held in Chennai from September 1 to 9, has been advanced by a day, Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) secretary K Jothikumaran announced on Tuesday, reports UNI.

Scotland name team for India tie
Scotland has called up England-based quartet of Navdeep Poonia, Gavin Hamilton, John Blain and Dewald Nel to strengthen their sqaud for Thursday’s one-dayer against India in Glasgow, reports UNI.

The squad: Ryan Watson (captain), John Blain, Gordon Drummond, Gavin Hamilton, Majid Haq, Paul Hoffmann, Neil McCallum, Navdeep Poonia, Dewald Nel, Colin Smith, Fraser Watts, Craig Wright.

Indian spikers outclass Pakistan
India drubbed Pakistan 3-0 in the fifth and final match of the five-match test series in Hyderabad on Tuesday, reports UNI. The hosts won 25-19, 25-23, 25-23 for a 4-1 series win.
