Bangalore airport has acquired hi-tech explosive detectors to screen any kind of explosives including liquid explosives.
The airport positioned among the hyper sensitive airports in India, is under an all-time red alert because of the Al Qaeda threat to India and reported infiltration of militants in the country through Jammu and Kashmir.
The Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS) has tipped the airport authorities to maintain stringent vigil in the wake of the Al Qaeda threat, especially during the Independence Day celebrations.
The airport has been given three explosive detectors. One is installed at the international terminal and two at the domestic terminals. “Baggage are being checked at all points manually and through X-ray machines. These machines are highly sophisticated and can detect any explosive device including liquid explosives,” said an official source.
Visitors entry has been banned at the airport from August 10 and no visitors are allowed to enter the terminal. The ban will continue till August 20. “We have suspended the visitors pass till then,” he said.
“Vehicles are being checked at the entry point and the City police have put up barricades to monitor people’s movement. “Ground staff have been sensitised on security measures and all airlines have been briefed on them as well. The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), responsible for peripheral security of the airport have also stepped up their vigil,” added the officer.
Meanwhile, there are reported alerts of a possible Naxal attack on the Independence Day in the State. “There’s some information that Naxals may thwart Independence Day celebrations. The district SPs have been asked to send a ground report. There’s a high red alert in the State,” said a senior police officer.
There were unconfirmed reports of some mail from a Naxalite leader to some newspapers and media houses of a possible attack on Wednesday. “We are not aware of any such letter or mail,” added the officer.
