CASE TRANSFERRED
CCB to probe kidney racket
DH News Service, Bangalore:

The case regarding the alleged kidney trade in and around Bangalore rural district, registered with Nelamangala police will be transferred to Yelahanka police on Thursday and from there it will be handed over to the City Crime Branch (CCB), as per the Government directions.

“As per the court order the accused have been remanded to police custody till August 17. All the three are housed in the central prison at Parappana Agrahara. The case registered with Nelamangala police will be transferred to Yelahanka police on Thursday to facilitate the CCB officers to continue the probe,” said a police officer of Nelamangala police station.

Case received

City Police Commissioner N Achuta Rao said they have received the case today from Nelamangala police. “We should start the investigation soon. It’s too early to say anything about it,” he added.

Committee

Regarding State government’s decision to constitute a Committee headed by Gopal B Hosur, joint commissioner of police (crime), to probe the alleged kidney trade, Mr Hosur said, he has not received any communication from his higher ups so far.

10 persons grilled

According to sources, Nelamangala police grilled more than 10 persons in the past two days in and around Nelamangala to get more details on the kidney racket.

These men reportedly worked as agents and used to identify poor labourers and farmers, including women to sell their kidneys. However, none of them have been arrested.

“There may be many such agents in and around Nelamangala, Magadi, Kollegal, Mandya and Chamarajnagar,” said a police officer.

Acquitted

“A kidney racket was busted in 1994, but the lower court acquitted the accused as the police failed to present enough evidence. Another such racket came to light in 2002 and the case was handed over to COD. More than 1,000 kidneys were allegedly sold with the help of doctors and agents,” he added.
