A second string to your bow or may be a second bow altogether, is the trainer’s job in a fitness centre. Major software companies have gyms of their own. Big corporations take bulk membership in gyms or reputed clubs so that their deskbound employees can stay in shape. Besides, the number of fitness centres is going up in cities like Bangalore in proportion to the rise in health awareness among the average city dwellers.
All these establishments contain sophisticated equipment and need skilled personnel to operate them. They also need trained staff to guide customers through their paces during workouts using such equipment. Employment potential in fitness centres therefore is growing but where do these establishments find manpower trained in imparting fitness training?
Often, a person who enrolls for training in a fitness centre and shows a high degree of proficiency, can aspire to a trainer’s post in the same centre. Some countrywide fitness centres even offer advanced coaching ranging from a few weeks to six months duration to those wishing to take up fitness training as a profession.
Apart from this, “The country has no institution that offers a course in fitness training,” according to Dr Y S Lakshmeesha, national coach in the SAI south centre in Bangalore.
