STUDYING IN INDIA
DR ALI KHWAJA

Dear Sir,
I am a graduate in BBM (Finance). I am keen on doing an ICWA or CA. Which has better scope? Which is a good centre for ICWA or CA in Bangalore?
Monalisa Senapati

Dear Monalisa,
Since you have completed your undergraduate studies in management with finance as your specialisation and have worked for over two years, you are in a position to do a self-analysis whether you are better at financial management or in the accounting function. The former requires more of people skills, decision making ability, abstract thinking, and planning ability. The latter requires mathe-logical mind, concentration, sequential thinking and resilience for continuous figure work.  Based on that you can decide whether you should go in for higher studies in management or move towards Cost and Works Accountancy (ICWA) or Chartered Accountancy (CA).  Both these certifications are offered only by the respective authorised bodies viz. Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India, and Institute of Chartered Accountants of India. Browse through their web-site or contact their local centres.

Dear Sir,
I am a BBM II year student. What is the importance of marketing, HR, Finance? What are the long term career opportunities available among these optionals? I am a Kannada medium student but I am able to understand your English.
Anonymous

Dear Anonymous,
I am happy you are picking up English after studying in Kannada medium as a good command over both languages will be a boost to your career. Marketing requires an extrovert nature (being able to interact with different types of people), persuasive ability, good self-esteem, willingness to travel and work irregular hours.  HR requires you to have a deep understanding of people, ability to resolve differences and conflict, capacity to motivate others, and patience. Finance requires a good mathe-logical mind, planning ability, capacity to analyse, good concentration, and a desire to do extensive table work. Check out which abilities are strongest in you and then choose your optional. They all have a good scope for those who are efficient and interested.

Dear Sir,
I am doing my final year B.Sc Biotechnology. I am not interested in an M.Sc and am considering MBA (biotech). Which colleges offer this course? What are the options other than an MBA and M.Sc?
RoseAnn

Dear RoseAnn,
MBA Biotech is offered by Pune University, and a few others are also likely to start soon. Please do not take up MBA just because you do not wish to do M.Sc.  Think of all the openings.  Here is a sample list: specialised areas of management, consumer psychology, military or civil service, computer applications, clinical research, library and information science, visual communication, documentation and technical writing, medical transcription, paramedical fields, social work, product development, etc.  If you are not interested in going deeper into any of the three subjects you are studying now, then see which of the above you would enjoy doing, and match it to your aptitude and strengths.  Accordingly, you can choose your higher studies and career.

Dear Sir,
I have completed II PUC (Science) and want to continue my studies in law. What are the openings for law graduates in the Air Force? I find it difficult to speak in English as I studied in Kannada medium upto high school.
Tejaswini, Harihar

Dear Tejaswini,
The five year BA, Ll.B. composite course is available to those who have completed 10+2 with any optional subjects. In this course you also have the option to drop out after three years with a B.A.(Law) degree, but it does not entitle you to practice as a lawyer. The best career opportunities are for those who have studied in any of the National Law Schools, who have an entrance exam of their own.  The Indian Air Force regularly recruits officers for their Legal Branch through UPSC, but the competition is tough. Don’t worry about English language, if you put in sufficient efforts, in the next five years you can master the language as good as an English medium student.

Dear Sir,
I am doing I PUC (Commerce). Which colleges offer courses like commercial artist, 3D Animator or some related profession? What is the scope for animation, the duration of the courses, the fees and other details.
PMK

Dear PMK,
Even though you are completing your PUC with Commerce, you are eligible to take up further studies in Arts. First check out your aptitude and talent. If you are a creative person with an artistic bent of mind, you can move into visual communication. Then you can decide whether to specialise in advertising, commercial art, visual merchandising, animation, web-page design, CAD, etc.  There are some institutions that are offering good design courses, coupled with a university degree. You can explore Shristi School of Design, Yelahanka, National Institute of Creative Communication (Ph: 65337001), Wigan and Leigh, etc. in Bangalore or the National Institute of Design, Mudra Institute of Communication etc. in other states.  Due to its technical nature, fee is likely to be above Rs. 1 lakh per year.

Dear Sir,
I am studying for a Diploma in electronics and communication. I completed the first year with 80 per cent marks. Will I get a job after this course? Should I change for a better course?
Srinivas, Nallur
Dear Srinivas,
Do continue with the course since you are doing well in it. After your three year diploma you will certainly get a job, but not at a senior level. You can then enroll either full time or part time for a three year BE through lateral entry by special CET. Alternatively, if you are working full time, you can even complete AMIE, which is equivalent to BE, by attending weekend classes.  With a degree in engineering, you can pursue a rich career, and can continue studying higher if you wish to.

Dear Sir,
I have completed B.Sc (Psychology). I want to do M.Sc in the same field in Bangalore. Could you mention the names of colleges that offer this course in Bangalore along with the course details?
Praful, Bangalore
Dear Praful,
M.Sc in Psychology is available to students who have completed their degree with any of the social science or home science subjects. You have a choice between Psychology and Psychological Counselling, both being two year M.Sc courses. These courses are available at Bangalore University, Christ, Surana, CMR, Montfort and a few other colleges, through their individual entrance tests. The course contains all aspects of human behaviour and the various fields of application from children to industrial, mentally ill, etc.
