The 60th Independence Day was celebrated with much enthusiasm and zest in and around the town on Wednesday.
Addressing the gathering at Hoysala auditorium, MLA M P Kumaraswamy said the government has allotted Rs 6 crore for the development of all rural roads of the taluk, while it has also come forward for the comprehensive progress of the region by declaring it an rain affected area.
Tahsildar C N Sridhar hoisted the national flag. Three ex-servicemen of the taluk, namely, Giriappa (Banakal), Basave Gowda (Goutuhalli) and K R Rajashekhar (Kelluru) were honoured on the occasion. ZP Member Jyothi Hemashekhar, Coffee Board member Subbe Gowda, TP Vice-President Chandre Gowda were present.
In Kalasa
Various educational, social and religious institutions across the hobali celebrated the Independence Day by conducting different competitions for the public. Students took out a colourful march-past on the main streets of the town till Sri Kalasheshwara Temple. Rotary unit distributed sweets and fruits to students and patients.
Auto Drivers’ Association honoured Physician Dr Ravikumar in the presence of Jagadish Bhat and Anand Shetty. Vehicle Owners’ and Drivers’ Association conducted ‘kesarugadde ota’ (race on mud). Vinayaka Self-help Group conducted kesarugadde volley ball, kesarugadde ota and tug-of-war at Marasanige.
Narasimharajapura
After hoisting the flag, Tahasildar G Ramesh observed that there should be honest efforts to take the government’s schemes to all individuals in order to eliminate unemployment and poverty completely.

In Sringeri
Tahsildar Yogeshwar hoisted the flag, which followed a march-past. Mr K G N Shastri delivered a special lecture at GSB hall. Meal plates were distributed to students of five schools on behalf of Bharat Helpline. Beneficiaries of Akrama-Sakrama and Ashraya schemes were given title deeds.
In Tarikere
Sub-divisional officer, Tahsildar Jayamadhava, who hoisted the flag here called upon the people to imbibe non-violence as their basic principle throughout the life. MLA T H Shivashankarappa presided.
Freedom fighters, achievers and meritorious students were felicitated. ‘Bhagyalakshmi’ bonds were distributed to the beneficiaries.
