Legislator S R Srinivas expressed concern that even 60 years after independence there was social inequality.
He was speaking at the 60th Independence Day celebrations held at PU college premises, here on Wednesday and said those who are progressing economically utilising the facilities that globalisation had brought in, they were leading a cush life. But dalits in rural areas and the life of backward classes which was deteriorating day-by-day was really a matter of concern, he added.
In the light of the thinking that the country can progress only through education, the coalition government has established one thousand highschools, 600 PU colleges and more than 150 degree colleges, he said.
No other government had given so much of importance to education in the past. Independence did not mean one could do anything that one wanted. Everyone should strive hard for the development of the country, he said, giving a call to the youth.
Tahsildar hoisted the national flag and received the guard of honour and read out the independence day message.
